Tonight we feature another guest mix - this one
from Austin DJ / producer NickNack, whose latest
album, Improving Silence has just hit the
streets. It's a solid 45 minute set, rife with
downtempo and hip-hoppity goodness, topped off by
Nick's exceptional turntable antics. Catch it
live this evening, or on next week's replay
online.
The new releases include:
Zero 7: When It Falls - A worthy successor to
Simple Things, Zero 7's second album retains much
of the same flavor as its predecessor without any
major surprises. Once again, Sam Hardaker and
Henry Binns utilize the vocal talents of Sia,
Sophie and Mozez to great effect and add newcomer
Tina Dico on the first single, "Home." The disc
seems a little on the short side and left me
wanting more, but that's a minor quibble. This
should be the album that breaks Zero 7 in the
U.S. and frankly, they deserve it.
Louie Vega: Elements Of Life - On hiatus from
production duties with Masters At Work, Vega has
created a beautiful, multi-cultural mix, drawing
from Latin, Brazilian, African and other musical
touchstones. Together with a nine-piece band and
collaborators such as Blaze, Elements Of Life is
a celebration of the soul and spirit that has the
power to move one's head and feet through its
joyous grooves.
V/A: Electric Gypsyland - What might seem like an
unlikely combination on paper - Balkan Gypsy
music remixed by electronic / dance producers
works surprisingly well on this eclectic
collection. Groups such as Taraf De Haïdouks,
Ursari De Clejan and Mahala Rai Banda are given
the re-rub by such notables as Lightning Head,
Senor Coconut, Juryman, Arto LIndsay and others,
for a refreshing world fusion that's both complex
and amusing.
Múm: Summer Make Good - More sparse minimalism
from this Icelandic quartet. Clocking in at under
40 minutes, shimmering electronics are integrated
with glockenspeil, melodica, trumpet, viola, pump
organ and the fragile vocalese of twin sisters
Gyda and Kristin Anna Valtysdottir. Written in a
remote lighthouse and recorded in an empty
weather station, the album evokes an eerie,
atmospheric vibe that permeates every track.
Watch for the release in April.
Of course there's more, but you'll just have to
tune in and hear if for yourself!
Until next week, ciao for now,
David
