Event Review: Phil Asher at the Electric Chair, Manchester. 27th November 2004.

Phil Asher certainly has an ear for selecting records. He has compiled numerous compilations and regularly travels the world to spin his wares. An extremely accomplished producer, Phil has won the hearts of music lovers the world over with the fantastic array of music he has released over the years. After a brief break from making tracks, he is now back in the studio, working on a wealth of new material. Somewhat surprisingly, this evening saw Mr. Asher grace the Unabombers’ subterranean party for the first time.

As usual, the ‘bombers handled the warm-up in the main room in an expert fashion. Luke started early doors with a brace of life giving soul-steeped wonders, before Justin took over the reigns and dropped a number of bouncing Afro House numbers and enlightening Disco cuts such as Theo Parrish’s emotional re-edit of a track that charts relationship tribulations, which can be found on ‘Ugly Edit 7’.

Phil said he felt the musically open-minded crowd at the Chair was similar to that of ‘Inspiration Information’, the night he does at London’s Notting Hill Arts Club with Patrick Forge. Mr. Asher obviously felt in his element on this night, enjoying the fact that he could play exactly what he wanted. He switched between styles in the manner of a truly talented DJ, throwing guitar-driven cuts, vocally housers, disco-dipped gems, captivating Detroit technoid flavours and more into the mix. Phil managed to get the balance between ‘huge’ records and ‘unknowns’ just right, and the crowd lapped up them all. He sandwiched mind-blowing classics from a range of genres between forgotten material from the past and fresh musical delicacies. His stunning selection included Darryl Pandy’s agonising “Love Can’t Turn Around”, Rhythm Is Rhythm’s magical “It Is What It Is”, Spy Music’s subversive “Cloak” and Metro Area’s heart-stopping “Caught Up”. It may have taken nearly a decade to co!
ax Mr. Asher to the Chair, but his set was worth waiting for.
