Club Review: All That Jazz with Dego at the Music Box, Manchester, 16th April 2005.

Over the last 20 years, Dego McFarlane has been a major player in a number of Brit-based electronic music scenes, releasing tracks under a beguiling number of pseudonyms. From rave to D&B, broken beat to neo-soul and more, Dego has a given the listening public an endless supply of incredible music. His trailblazing Reinforced imprint, set up with 4 Hero partner Marc Mac, released a number of important hi-speed breakbeat heavy cuts, whilst in more recent times he set up the peerless broken beat driven 2000 Black label.

Dego is one of the few people in ‘modern electronic music’ who is a supremely talented deck operative as well being a producer of life-changing music. This rare appearance in the North West brought out a varied, respectably sized crowd to the Music Box. On a quiet night in the city, many had opted to take the trip to All That Jazz, but thankfully, the high-ceiling basement club was not uncomfortably busy and so those getting down on the dancefloor still had enough room to throw their moves. Dego acted as a hypnotist, mesmerizing the dancers with the wonderful spacey vibed music that he played. Sticking mainly with fracturedly beaten tracks, nasty bass driven efforts fitted perfectly alongside soul-flavoured numbers and warped Hip Hop styled tracks. Cuts of note included Sa-Ra’s captivating “Glorious”, the impassioned “Waitin’” from Bugz In The Attic and Kid Sublime’s off-kilter “Space Jam” that featured alongside hot unreleased gems and other, more familiar cuts. The o!
nly disappointment was when Dego stepped down from the Music Box’s turntables and brought the crowd back to earth, at the end of an outstanding set.
