Clubs - Sweden

A listing of some Swedish clubs that have some relation to the Acid Jazz scene. The list completed with kind help of Mårten Brink (marten.brink@iri.su.se).
Look in the papers on fridays and you'll probably find something interesting.
Gino
An excellent club! Nice vibes in a beautiful place. They seem to get all the interesting bands and artists to play here...

Fashing
An old and quite famous jazz-club at Kungsgatan 63. In the last couple of years the more youth-oriented jazz-scene has more or less taken over. If you go there, don't be surprised to find a young audience (around 20) since everybody thinks it's quite cool to go Fashing - and sometimes it's really worth it. The following clubs might be interesting to pop in to:

Thursdays: Directivo Latinklubb
Mostly Latin and more "easy-listening" oriented music but still with the dance-scene in mind. The newest of the various club-nights at Fashing. (Sorry, I've never been there so I don't really know what it's like - and it's supposed to be good..) Open hours ? (probably 23-03) (50kr entrance).

Fridays: Round Midnight
The guys behind this formerly hosted the more known Blacknuss nights on Thursdays (also the guys behind the group Blacknuss Allstars). This time they promise a more "original" thing. That means less swing and brit-soul that dominated at Blacknuss towards the end. The style is original Acid-Jazz. Whatch out for screaming hammonds and groovy baselines. Open hours 24-04 (50kr entrance).

Saturdays: Soul
Ok, it's not Acid-Jazz but it's still great and by the way, where do you draw the line between good old soul and acid-jazz? Every saturday night the DJ's work their way through old as well as new soul greats. Open hours 23-03 (50kr entrance).

Tranan Bar at Karlbersvägen 14 (Odenplan), open until 1 am.
Often the best DJ's in town. At weekdays cool and soft easy-listening. You'll find the likes of Astrud Gilberto and THE loverman, Barry White. Everything in a tastefull blend. On weekends the bar (also try the restaurant one stair up) is crowded and you will hear a crazy mix spanning soul, acid-jazz, house, techno, jungle, hip-hop, ambient and anything else you can think of. It's not a place for dancing, but still almost half the crowd is jumping their nights away. Crowded and great. Stockholms best bar and a great place to start (and end?) the night. A must!

East Bar at Stureplan 13, open until 3 am.
You don't know the definition of a crowd until you've been here on a weekend night. Very high music (someone said they thougt the bartenders there turned the volume up to get some people to leave?!?). Mix of soul and acid-jazz. New as well as old. Watch out for the line at the door.

Köket och en bar, at Sturegallerian 30, open until 1 am (and between 3-5 am for breakfast).
Directly across the street from East Bar you will find a quite nice place often packed with people. A small dance floor were noone ever will find room enough to dance. Mainly acid-jazz coming from the speakers. Some good old soul occasionally comes out of them too. Once again, watch out for the line outside. But why not go there early and eat in the restaurant part - it's often good and not to expensive. Enjoy! (You faithfull acid-jazzers: Watch out for Sunday nigths. Then it's all rock'n'roll and indie pop).

Lydmar hotell
Live acts several nights a week. No entrance fee! Previously featured artists: Jimmy McGriff, Beverly Knight, Roy Ayers, Isaac Hayes, etc.

Lund

Stereo in Lund
Sweet Fred hosts a weekly night of new- and old cluboriented sounds from jazz to house. Every Saturday at Stortorget in Lund, often with natinal and international guests. Jazzanova, Rainer Truby, Snowboy, Charlie from Attica Blues, UFO, Monday Michuru, Kyoto Jazz Massive and many others have played here. See stereo.
Fusion in Lund
The fusion family hosts a monthly night of the uniqe mix that is clubs fusion in Stockholm and Lund. Always with international djs or artists. The love of old school jazz and soul is proudly worn on their sleeve even if the music is often 2000+. A totally amazing linup thru the years. See fusion.

Uppsala

Katalin
Katalin is a café in Uppsala (80 km north of Stockholm) that is run by Mrs. Katalin - a big jazz fan. She knows a lot of jazz musicians and is able to get the big ones to perform at her place. Some nights, usally fridays, they play more funky stuff.

Linköping

Platens Bar
Platens Bar opened in May 1992 in the mid-Swedish city of Linköping. Platens is a relatively small club for about 250 - 300 guests, with a distinguishing mark in clubbing of having an very mixed audience in age (20 and up), as well as in lifestyles and nationalities.
We are brought up with soul, funk and reggae, and by "We" I mean the 20-25 people that are "spiritually connected" to the club, helping us to uphold "vibes" and the fine atmosphere in and around the club. Our ambition has from the start been to be a musical and cultural water hole with activities as art exhibitions, live performances where the entrance-money goes to organizations as Amnesty International, and other activities that can enlighten people.

Göteborg

Nefertiti, at Hvitfeldtsplatsen 6
Lots of really groovy music. Especially on Wednesday and Sunday. BE THERE EARLY (around 21.00) or you may have to stand in line for one hour. During the rest of the week they mostly play plain Jazz.

UNDERGROUND/Kompaniet, at Kungsgatan
They were recently visited by NINJATUNE, Lords of Brooklyn, and OUTSIDE are playing there soon. BUT BE WARE !!! when they are not funky, they are hardcore, pop or indie.

Malmö

MATTSONs ÖLSTUGA,
Fredmans
Both places have live jazz. Usually several times per week.
