Thanks for these explanations because I too was baffled about this at their 
last NYC show!  Since then, I also heard they also had the same road manager 
(or agent?) as Phish.  Usually acid jazz shows here in NYC draw a real mix 
of ethnicities and ages, but their audience was so homogeneous I knew it was 
coming from somewhere else.  And they didn't smell so hot either.  Let me 
tell you.  The deadhead thing doesn't work so well in NYC; the city has lots 
of pollution as it is, so bathing takes on an added hygienic significance, 
and then there's the space factor:  you end up having to ride on the subway 
home pressed against lots of strangers so it's just not polite.  But for all 
I know, there must be lots of fans of acid jazz I don't know much about out 
west.  Don't skate/snowboarders love it too, for example?  (That's not such 
a huge scene here either; you risk getting hit by a bus...)
