dear list,
i can't believe it! ursula rucker will be performing at al's bar
(downtown l.a.) on wednesday night! i am definately planning on being
there, and i hope to see some of the other l.a. listmembers there.

in other news, i went to a tribute concert tonight for mumia abu-jamal. i
didn't get to see leon mobley & da lion, but i got to witness the rest of
the lineup, which was pretty impressive. there was everything from folky
to funky banjo to spoken word and jazz.

derf reklaw performed towards the end of the evening with his band, and
the whole house was cheering & feeling the vibe of their tightness. prior
to that, we were treated to a performance by the watts prophets, whom i'd
never seen/heard before--let me just say i now understand why they have
such an amazing reputation. there were some other lovely spoken word
performances...the one i remember was by sonja marie (don't know if she's
local to the l.a. scene or whether she has a larger reputation).

other performers included sister somayah kambui & nate morgan, billy
higgins, and charles owens, as well as a very soulful guitar player named
dwight trible who, as it turns out, works at the pete's coffee shop just
down the street from me in pasadena. how's about that? =)

oh, also didn't get a chance to see cut chemist, but oh well, can't get
everything...
