Hi folks,
I'm on the road this week but just got a swell email from
my friend Carly at KCRW that I wanted to forward. I
haven't heard this release yet but if she likes it THIS
much, you can be SURE it's worth checking out...
Mark
> Right now, it all boils down to two words. Extended Spirit. They released a
> new EP; not only a new EP but a double 12 inch as well. Reason for rejoicing.
> Every week you get a listing of all new records I've been checking out; most
> of them these days seem to be house records, but all you guys that really
> know me understand that I am truly a downtempo diva. Downtempo for me has
> always encompassed all styles of music, sampling from Coltrane to Cline,
> always reminding me of soundtracks to films made and those imagined with drum
> programming I can't resist . As a true film lover, I found something to
> listen to and love as much as cinema itself.
> But certain genres go through stages and I feel that a lot of other genres
> are pushing the limit these days...in new invigorating house styles, drum
> n'bass, breakbeat...
> However, once in a while, an EP comes along that blows me away and makes me
> remember how much I love downtempo abstract music - especially spaced out
> jazzy music with a Brazilian feel - a soundtrack to a now BLACK ORPHEUS.
> That record came along last October when in London I stumbled upon Extended
> Spirit's "Solid Water" EP. Extended Spirit did some excellent work on the
> original Jazzanova EP a couple years back, the EP that has spawned a whole
> crew of Berlin based producers. Well on the first Jazzanova EP is a track
> entitled "Bohemian Sunset" which along with the well-known "Fedime's Flight"
> really blew open a whole new door to a stylish, sophisticated genre of music,
> music that makes you feel like you're in the midst of the most melodic
> post-modern carnival ever.
> The Solid Water EP goes down as one of my favorite records of '98 for too
> many reasons to list. It was love at first hear from the moody Rhodes in
> FADIN' IN with a vibe reminiscent of a French film from the 60's; to dramatic
> space n'bass of PRESSURE '98 a song that reveals itself as it goes along, to
> the quirky bass lines of THE HUB...and that's only side A! Side B - whoa!
> Basically, it's a stellar EP that combines many different styles of
> electronic music together in a provocative & riveting way.
> SO...I am thrilled to say that more Extended Spirit has arrived - in the
> shape of a remix EP (although the original is so good - I almost wouldn't
> want anyone to mess with it) with reworkings by Rainer Truby himself and
> Beatless; plus a full-length 9 song CD of material plus the remixes.
> These are talented producers - their music is resplendent with jazz and
> Brazilian and funk and done so well. I don't get excited too often...but I
> am..and I wanted to share this with you my friends. So grab this record
> before it sells out....and you have to tape it from a friend....
