    There's a program called cdparanoia which does an amazing job at reading
    damaged cds. I had a Gilberto Gil cd with half the songs completely
    unplayable, let cdparanoia read it in (it took almost 30 hours!) and
    then burned a copy, which was almost perfect - just a little bit of
    extra noise on a few songs.

    It's free too, but I think only available for linux. But probably
    similar programs exist for other platforms as well.
