I'm so sorry to rehash this subject that comes up every so often. every time
people make suggestions for software and gear, I kind of get glossy-eyed and
shove it in a folder for later perusal. Later never comes of course...
but now I have an interest in expanding just slightly. The scenario I'm looking
at is recording a live instrument (or 2?) alongside turntables in a live or
pre-recorded setting. Right now, I record mixes from the mixer right into
soundforge and burn cds from that.
There are 2 possibilities I see: 1) a small mixing board and effects unit (to
mess with instruments) to combine the instruments and tables into one line in to
the computer, and 2) a multitrack recording program that would take a line in
from mixer and mic in as seperate tracks, that would allow me to apply effects
to one track at a time. 3) I suppose I could also get a super fancy sound card
or other thingamajig for the computer. I know nothing about high-end computer
music stuff and the options and potential money to be spent make my head spin.
So I want to keep it simple.
What are people's experiences and recommendations? I'm trying to keep to the
budget options, but willing to make an investment if it's a smart one. Also,
what would you recommend as a good solid music laptop? My work has a discount
program with Dell. I'd maybe consider a mac, but I can get a dell or other PC
subsidized through work which makes it a lot more attractive.
