Here are a few reviews of some records I've been enjoying the last few weeks
or so...
Cherrywine – 16th Minute / In Here feat. Nia Long - Cherrywine. Ishmael
Butler [Digable Planets] returns with a band that is very much on point.
16th Minute fuses hip hop, rap, and rock with Ishmael’s lyrics that that
aren’t out to prove anything. In Here is a new soul waltz that brings
things home with a vibe the is pure relaxation. Perfect slow jam to lay
down with your honey to at the end of a long day. Ishmeal blesses the track
with prose Nia Long is backing him up one hundred percent with her gentle
voice, love, and keeping things grounded to earth. Essential songs to
obtain if you’re into hip hop and nu soul. Just got an email saying that
this record is the number one seller at sandboxautomatic.com! Get it while
ya can...
Numbers – Safety In Numbers – Mainsqueeze. This is a excellent example of
what has been going down with this [relatively] new music coming out people
are calling future jazz and nu soul. African rhythms, broken beats, funky,
jazzy instrumentation, and outrageous lyrics are laid down by incredible
artists including Doug and Jean Caramouce. If you’ve been feeling some of
the nu jazz and broken beats on the heavy and soulful tip then this is for
you! Definitely worth your dough as every track on this album is insane.
Declaime – Illmindmuzik - Illmindmuzik. This isn’t all that new, but I’m
lovin this record from Dudley Perkins and produced by Madlib! This is the
sound of west coast Hip Hop and Rap. Declaime is a talented lyricist that
maintains intelligence and consciousness while not doing too much trying to
say something complicated. Madlib keeps the beats raw and soulful as usual.
Favorite tracks include “Wicked Ways”, “Roll ‘Em Right”, and “Let It Be
Known”.
Kim Hill – Summertime In Aspen / DJ Spinna Remix – Up Above. Wow, this
woman is off the charts! A talented nu-soul singer who plays multiple
instruments, she had a full length cd available at her website kimmykim.com
a year or two ago [don’t think it’s available anymore]. Most of us will
remember and recognize her as the singer from the Black Eyed Peas. The
original is a bittersweet soul jam and the record features a remix and
instrumental by DJ Spinna. Highly recommended for nu-soul seekers.
Ultra Nate - Twisted - Giant Step. Not only do we have production from
4hero and D-Influence on the original... but some very good remixes by Bossa
Cuca Nova and Blaze. The original is a mid tempo, slower track with some
bittersweet lyrics that are so beautiful they almost hurt. The Bossa Cuca
Nova mix is also dope and keeps the tempo down with some silky smooth ish
you'll dig if your interested in the slow jams I mentioned above. The Blaze
remixes are uptempo jazzy house tracks that compliment the record well for
the dancefloor.
Other tunes I'm feeling...
Faith - I Love You... from the latest Faith album and getting much radio
play... seems like everybodys loving this track.
Michael Jackson - Butterflies ...yeah give me a break I need a rest from
all this heavy underground stuff sometimes!
Pharcyde - Runnin [Jay Dee Remix]
Alison David - Last Look [domu remixs]
Seek - The Story of Us
Nas - Everybody Crazy / No Ideas... unreleased Nas tracks not on the latest
Stillmatic album.
Peace. OUt.
