Funny thing is I always thought Copeland had a pretty big set (not compared to
Van Halen or Neil Peart mind you but big enough). I used to really like
Stewart Copeland a lot when I was first learning to drum (I have since learned
I'm not physically rhythmical) but learned that his technique (though really
good) was too smooth for the style I wanted to learn. Copeland, to me, is more
stylish whereas I like drummers who push rhythm like Al Jackson Jr., Idris
Muhammad, Harvey Mason (one of my all-time favorites). I still dig Police,
though.

In my opinion however,
some of the truly greatest drummers have never needed a big fancy kit.
Stewart Copeland is one that immediatly comes to mind. I don't know how
many of you have ever really stopped to listen to the drumming on much of
the Police's stuff (I was a big, big fan back in 1980) but I personally
feel he ranks right at the top as far as talent. The man could keep an
incredible beat and pace through an entire song! When you concentrate on
it, you'll swear that he's an octopus or something :)
