1) The Attica Blues "Blueprint" remix by Attica Blues (on the remix EP) fits
great with that Kenny Dope "Get On Down" song. Start the vocal in the Kenny Dope
breakdown right after the last Method Man sample in that breakdown, when it goes
into the bass. Sweet.
2) The song with the crazy flute part off Mr. Scruff's The Frolic EP works
finely with that T. Tauri white label... the song that is faster with the Fila
Brazilia vibe. You can scratch that flute in and basically play around with it
through the whole song. Then, at the end, let it go and they'll mix nicely one
to the other.
3) The Underdog mix of Massive Attack's "Protection" is nicely complemented by
the Sabres of Paradise mix of Bomb The Bass' "Dark Heart" (which should be
pitched down). This works especially well if you are using a mixer that has
seperate EQ's for each channel, as the bass line in the Sabres mix slightly
clashes and should be EQ'ed out. However, the snare line in the Sabres' mix adds
an extra dancey element to the Massive Attack song that sends 'em groovin...
4) Hats off to Craig Willingham, lurking somewhere on this list, for the idea of
this bizarre mix: Portishead's "Numb" with the instrumental to Jeru's "Come
Clean" (though Jeru needs to be pitched WAY down).
5) And my favorite mix of all time... the sparse mix of Jhelisa's "Friendly
Pressure" (remix by Baumont Hannant... do I have that right?) works so nice with
Fila Brazillia's "Harmonica's Are Shite". Start the beginning percussion of
"Friendly Pressure" right after that second big drum/organ fill and the vocals
sync up sweetly with what's happening in the Fila song. Exact matching key, too.
Again, this works better if you can EQ the bass out of Jhelisa so you just have
the high percussion hits and not the bass drum. These 2 were definitely made for
each other.
6) Not my mix, but DJ BMF's: that "Spacehopper Dub" off DJ Emma's Based EP with
an accapella of Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise". Whew. He also did a mix with
the Nightmares On Wax side of the La Funk Mob double 10" with an accapella of
Brand New Heavies' "Dream On Dreamer"... and it worked! I was dancing next to
Howie B when BMF first pulled this out and we both just stopped and laughed our
asses off! BMF is the man with the creative accapella/instrumental
juxtapositions, definitely.
Interesting thread... what are some others?
