Well, I found a friend to go with to see the Groove Collective and the
Philosopher Kings in Montreal Friday night.
GC was up first, at nine sharp, to fit the tight schedule of the Canadian
Broadcasting Corp., which simulcast the show on national radio. An 80
minute show, as you all know the music was excellent. At times super
tight, others a little lazyier. The place was superfunked toward the end,
as the band climbed into the most serious grooves of the night playing a tune
from their upcoming album, something about climbing a mountain. Nappy G
(sp?) also led the crowd on a singalong for the band's new tune I Am.
Well worth the somewhat exorbitant $30 price to get in.
I have a feeling tapes of the show, which featured other live performances
from the Montreal Jazz Festival, can probably be ordered from CBC Radio. Don't
know their number, but they broadcast from Toronto.
Philosopher Kings? Totally unexceptional. Loved by the crowd, lots of
energy, but I found the tunes to be strictly so-so funk-pop. Sorry I can't
be more charitable to a group of high-energy fellow Canadians. Maybe if
they hadn't *followed* GC I might have had a different opinion.
Cheers
Brother Sean
