I agree so far with what has been said except for the point about original jazz artists creating classics and acid jazz creating essentially disposable music. While some acid jazz is pretty disposable, it has brought back to jazz the basicelement of street rhythm. I remember seeing a "jazz" band while at college who were middle aged men playing very contrived rhythms so that they could show off these complex licks they had. As a non-musician I was lost and didn't appreciate the complexity of their music. Jazz has become a music that has lost touch with its roots, but hip hop, trip hop, acid jazz, or whatever has focused on these roots and has brought to life a music that had gone stale. It also has opened up the classic jazz to a whole new audience that would have otherwise been ignorant of its greatness.
Remember, they said the Sex Pistols wouldn't last because they couldn't play their instruments, but look at the scope of their legacy!
