Why is Steely Dan being thrown around as some sort of insult on the list?

Absolutely!And a major surprise is the new release of S,Dan live in the US.
It sounds wonderful and makes you realise they were great.
Incidentially,they credit their studio creativity to the wierd music of
Esquival and his orchestra-and recent re-issues of his bizarre lounge
stereo music show some of the tricks S Dan used.
