Upon the initial spin of this disc, I was immediately reminded of Frank
Zappa's work within the jazz genre. The quirky time changes and
innovative mixtures of progressive rock and jazz seemed to pay homage to
Zappa's satirical orchestrations. I kept waiting, however, for a groove
to surface. Never happened. I suppose my anticipation was due to the fact
that reviewers were solicited from this acid-jazz mailing list. While
there is no doubt that Science Fixion is comprised of very accomplished
musicians, the tracks never communicated the groove. Overall, Sting Of
The Star Spider is a sophomoric attempt at breaking new ground (acid-jazz
perhaps). If this is the case, I suggest that some research into the
groove/jazz/funk area would not be a bad exeercise prior to their next
release. If, in fact, SF is well seated in the progressive/quirk rock
arena that Sting Of The Star Spider seems to subscribe to, then I hope
they don't change a thing. Science Fixion is probably slated to be a
master of that domain. Although it ain't acid-jazz, it is fun, and it is
unusual. I personally outgrew this type of music many years ago.
