Hi everyone,

My name is Eric Kalabacos (friends call me EK). I just found out about this
list and am stoked to know that I'll have the opportunity to connect with
other folks who are into the AJ scene.

Here's a brief introduction:

I live in downtown San Francisco, am 30 years old, and work primarily as a
multimedia producer and computer graphic artist. I've always been a
disciple of the funk and have had a deep interest in acid jazz for about 5
years now. A couple of years ago I started a club called Jazid Up (also
known as Mushroom Jazz) that still happens on Monday night's at Cat's
Alley.

I am totally into the music and continue to do what I can to promote the
scene in the Bay Area. My girlfriend Veronika and I managed to convince the
San Francisco Jazz Festival to sponsor an acid jazz show for the first time
this year.

A couple of weeks ago I responded to a request for info on the show from
someone on the sfraves list, so I thought I'd copy it below:

Veronika and I happen to be the folks putting on this show, so I thought
I'd tell y'all a bit more about it:

After about a year's worth of cajoling, we managed to pursuade the San
Francisco Jazz Festival to be the first major American jazz festival to
officially sponsor an acid jazz show. We did it to help promote the scene
in SF and to let the traditional jazz audience know that acid jazz is here
to stay.

All the acts in the show are on Ubiquity Records. Ubiquity is an excellent
local label owned by Mike and Jody McFaddin. They've put out a number of
excellent compilations (Home Cookin', Mo Cookin' Still Cookin',
Explorations I & II, Is that Jazz?) and are now putting out some full
length LP's (Greyboy, Spirit Level, and soon: Slide 5, New Legends, Better
Daze). They have also re-released dozens of 70's jazz funk records under
the name Luv N' Haight. We thought they'd be an excellent representation of
the local scene.

The lineup for the night is as follows:

Slide 5 (w/ special guest Ledisi) - a smokin' funk band featured on several
Ubiquity comps - these guys will be returning to SF after a year in NY and
the show will be their homecoming debut. Their first album should be
released around the time of the show.

DJ Greyboy - dope DJ/producer from San Diego - soon to be releasing his 2nd
lp - (Bart, he's just DJing) ;)

New Legends - a hot new local band featured on the "Is That Jazz?"
compilation - I saw them at the Oddball and they fuckin' cooked!

Better Daze - a "double DJ" act with Paul Scriver and DJ Andrew from On The
One. Their first record will be released just before the show.

Kelly Huff - a world class scat singer featured on the Ping Pong cuts from
the Cookin' series.

Paul Scriver - saxman featured on the "Is That Jazz?" comp.

There will be a '60s-style psychedelic light show by Glenn McKay. Glenn
used to do lights for bands such as The Jefferson Airplane and is coming
out of retirement just for this show.

By the way, this aint gonna be a typical "sit in your chair and clap
politely" jazz festival show. The tables will be cleared and we expect the
dance floor to be bumpin'!

Tix are $18 (sorry, I know this is a bit steep, but there are alot of acts
and the Jazz Fest and Bimbo's take a hefty cut) and are available at the
Jazz Festival store next to Cyberlab @ Four Emarcadero Ctr. You can also
buy them @ Tower or the Wherehouse (with the BASS rip-off added) or at
Bimbo's the night of the show. We're also planning an afterparty (probably
@ 111 Minna if they get their licence in time) w/ Greyboy and Better Daze
freestylin' it.

I just sent the flyers to the printer today. If you want me to send you one
just e-mail your snail-mail address to me.

peace out,
ek =o)

anyway, I thought folks on this list might be interested as well. I still
have a bunch of flyers so just email me your address if you want one.

I look forward to spending time on the acid jazz list and hearing more
about what goes on here.

Peace & love,
ek
