(I'm yet another new subscriber to the a-j list, but I've been lurking for
a few weeks. Howdy -- this seems like a great place.)
Would anybody be interested in putting together an acid-jazz 'Top 10'
for newcomers?
One of the daunting things about getting into this music (aside from
that definition problem) is walking in a record store and being confronted
with all the compilation series: This Is Acid Jazz / Acid Jazz /
Is That Jazz? / Acid Jazz Test / Totally Wired / etc, etc, etc,
sometimes with the same name but on different labels and all with
what seems like 20 volumes of bands you've never heard of.
Now that I've finally gotten this whole Mo' Wax / Mo' Jazz / Mo' Cookin' /
Mo'fessionals thing worked out, I'd like to know which compilations are
turkeys and which are gems.
Both the ambient and IDM lists conducted 'top 10' polls last year that
were very helpful to me in dipping my toes in their water. Have you folks
considered anything similar? How about the acid-jazz mailing list
Top Ten? (Or even in several categories, since it's hard to compare
jazzy acid-jazz to "Trip Hop" (ugh) stuff.)
Is this a good idea? Would anybody be interested in running a vote?
(I'd certainly be willing to put my money where my mouth is and do it,
although since I'm new that seems kind of presumptuous.)

ps I'm completely bummed that the San Francisco Jazz Festival Ubiquity
night is already sold out. I was going to suggest a pre-concert dinner, but
of course I don't have tickets. Would there be any interest in an
SF a-j list evening get-together some other night?
pps As an aside, given the number of 'subscribe' messages I've been seeing on
the list, I would NOT put 'acid-jazz@ucsd.edu' on the cover of any
list sampler records. You'll get a whole lot of newbie subscribe letters
clogging up the list.
