For those interested in the electro-acoustic side of things Sufi's debut
recording Life's Rising may be to your liking. The group is comprised of
Rudy Tambala (known for his work with AR Kane), his sister Alice on
vocals and drummer Benny Di Massa. Sufi's languid mix of acoustic guitar
and drums meanders and twists into beautiful patterns that take on
added dimensions when smothered in a wash of
flucutating bass. Their use of skeletal song forms invites comparison
to Portishead, however, Sufi's paritcular take on "dub soul" falls more
towards the sunnier side of the street. Life's Rising can be added to the
growing list of sound system based music that meshes the conventions of
dub, hip hop, soul, and electronic music into truly masterful
hybrids. Crossing the divide between temporal and leveling, Life's Rising
should find equal appeal among both ambient fans and bassheads alike.
