Try checking out Fela Kuti for some really incredible afrobeat music.
This is a term he coined for his style of hard african rythms mixed in
with some really really great sax and hammond organ soloing. He uses very
cool call-and-response chanting to take over after the soloists (usually
Fela) leave off. A word of caution though. 95% of the stuff Fela has done
is somewhat worse than mediocre, but something from circa 1971 should be
very good. I have 'He Miss Road', 'London Scene', and THe LA sessions
'69. He miss is incredible and the others are also very tight. These are
reissues by Stern's records in London and I would recommend getting
something from this label as they are serious about putting only good music.
The first time I heard Fela, I thought it was James Brown, but then I
thought no way, JB isnt this good.
