_Public Organ_: An Interactive, Networked Sound Installation at the
International Computer Music Conference and on the World Wide Web
September 3-7 1995, Banff, Alberta Canada-_Public Organ_, an interactive
sound installation commissioned for the 1995 International Computer Music
Conference will be accessible September 3-7, 1995 both physically at the
conference and electronically through the World Wide Web at URL
http://www.prairienet.org/~scaletti/PublicOrgan.html
A sometimes-humorous-sometimes-serious commentary on the Internet, _Public
Organ_ invites participants to experience linking, lurking, looping and
collective thinking through interaction with everyday objects: a
television, a radio, a telephone, a spray can, a camera, and a book.
Web participants will be able to contribute grafitti and images of
themselves that will be instantly incorporated into the installation. They
will also be able to view images and hear sounds from the physical
installation as well as see and talk to other installation participants.
Composer Carla Scaletti took the title from a passage in _The Lives of a
Cell_, a collection of essays by biomedical researcher Lewis Thomas:
The human brain is the most _Public Organ_ on the face of the earth, open
to everything, sending out messages to everything....We pass thoughts
around, from mind to mind, so compulsively and with such speed that the
brains of mankind often appear, functionally, to be undergoing fusion.
_Public Organ_ will be active from 3-7 September 1995.
