Expanding the traditional New Orleans sound is the explosive nine piece Soul
Rebel Brass Band. Formed out of the fourth generation Young Olympia Brass Band,
the Rebels are no ordinary second line ensemble (Second line brass bands
traditionaly follow and play behind funeral parades). The Soul Rebels describe
themselves as a "funk, hip-hop, don't stop till you drop and can't move" brass
band... Combining lyrics, chants, and familiar melodies with the rebel twist
they have produced a modern-day jazz thing... The band recently released thier
first album on Mardi Gras Records, completed a tour of Europe and plan to tour
America soon. They play weekly at Trombone Shorty's in the historic Trem?
district in New Orleans. ? On The One Fall '94
Sorry for the lengthy description but if anyone does take a trip to New Orleans
do check these guys out. They are like nothing you will ever see. The first time
I ever saw them my jaw just dropped to the floor. Since then every time I go
home to N.O. I make sure I see them. I can't say that I've seen their record
anywhere but I did hear a live recording of one of their show which really
did'nt do them justice. It's hard to capture 9 guys dancing around on stage then
into the audience and then outside onto the street while they work the crowd
into a frenzy.
