but who were the "rudies & mods"?

rudies and mods made their appearance on the youth subculture scene in London
in the late 50s early 60s. if you've seen Quadrophenia, you'll recognize the
rivalry between the mods (on their scooters) versus the long haired heavy
rock n roll types...the rudeboy scene (which is the predecessor to the mods),
as I understand it, gradually split into two groups -- the mods and the
skins, each, of course, defining their own styles of musical expression -- a
la paul weller for the mods and Oi for the skins. Of course there was always
a lot of cross-over musically and stylistically between all these groups
where you'd find rudies and ska listening skins together, etc.
an excellent book to check out is "The elements of Style" by Dick Hebdige
published by Routledge London (I think) -- the book is a fascinating (albeit
slighty academic) account of the English youth subculture beginning with the
ska/teddyboys up to the sex pistols era...
hope this helps,
