Hello all. Just got back from Toronto. What a fiasco! All car and hotel
problems aside, caught the DJ Food/ Funki Porcini show. For those who are
wondering what its all about, basically just a straight DJ show. Don't
want to come off sounding negative, but I have to say I was pretty
disappointed, especially for the 20 dollars I blew to get in. The DJ Food
fellas had it going on during the second set, playing choice drum and
bass, old funk, and hip-hop classics, but for some reason they did the
1st set through their stage monitors only. I was pretty upset that I was
able to hold a coherent conversation with my friend and barely have to
speak up to be heard. Funki Porcini, while he played the dopest and
newest cuts, couldn't mix to save his life. He just kind of stood their
cueing up tracks and tapping his foot offbeat. It was kind of funny
actually. The biggest problem was that although some people were into it,
not many people were dancing. They just had a couple of sets of
turntables on stage and didn't even face the crowd, yet everybody stood
watching them like they were rock stars or something. When they were dropping
the drum and bass the dance floor cleared; those left basically stood there.
But I can't front altogether, DJ Food have got skills and were fitting
some really nice tracks together in odd ways ("Passing me by" accapella
over this real jazzy drum and bass cut- fresh!). And they let me, a
perfect stanger to them, beat box on stage for a little bit. What a rush.
A good show altogether, but I could of saved 20 bucks and probably had a
better time in Detroit or something. Anybody else have any comments or
reactions to the show?
