MOLASSES
"Madness (Conversations With My Sanity)" EP
UBIQUITY
***********************************************************************=
****
WHO IS MOLASSES?
- Independent hip hop producer, based in San Francisco, CA.
- Production for well-known groups: Cypress Hill (Columbia/RuffHouse) =
and Me Phi Me (RCA).
- Recorded =B3Madness=B2 E.P. at the Glue Factory (Automator=B9s =
personal home studio)
where the following albums were born: Kool Keith=B9s Dr. Octagon =
album, DJ Shadow=B9s
=B3Entroducing=B2, Blackalicious=B9 =B3Melodica=B2, and all of DJ =
Q-Bert=B9s scratch LPs.
WHAT DOES HE SOUND LIKE?
Typically called =B3headphone music=B2, these songs are hip hop =
orchestrations,
similar to tracks by DJ SHADOW and/or DJ KRUSH. Songs range from the
hypnotizing tones of =B3Meditation (Sitting By The Purple Pond)=B2 to =
the
distorted, horror-soundtrack theme of =B3Madness (A Conversation With =
My Sanity)=B2.
=B3Headphone music is about how the song makes you FEEL. It sets the =
mood.
It changes your mind set. When you listen to a Molasses track, =
don=B9t take
it literally. Instead, release yourself to the vibe and let it take =
you
on a journey into your own mind... journey music...=B2 - MOLASSES

BOBBY MATOS & HIS AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ ENSEMBLE
=B3Footprints=B2
CUBOP RECORDS
***********************************************************************=
****
It's straight ahead jazz embellished in authentic Afro-Cuban
drumming. The harmonic and melodic blend is very pleasing and
the arrangements are first rate. The brass voicings are
abundant with character and Bobby's fine timbal work glues
it all nicely together. My favorites on this disc are the
latin-ized versions of two eternal gems, Wayne Shorter's
=B3Footprints=B2 and John Coltrane's =B3Naima=B2(featuring Jerry
Gonzalez of the Fort Apache Band).
Bad=B2, to the tasty tipico Latin jazz of Bobby's own =B3Kimbisia=B2,
to the string arrangements on =B3Recuerdos=B2, this CD is
pleasantly HIP! I truly enjoyed listening to it! You'll
be tapping it's rhythms and humming it's melodies for a
long time.
- from the liner notes by Jose Rizo of Jazz Radio KLON FM 88.1, Long =
Beach, CA
Footprints is Bobby Matos=B9 second release on CuBop. His first,
Chango=B9s Dance, marked the label=B9s debut and set a precedence,
both artistically and commercially, that we at CuBop work to match
with every release. Chango=B9s Dance recieved widespread critical
acclaim and jazz radio air play. Sales remain nearly as strong
as the day it was released. Perhaps the most impressive
testament to Bobby=B9s ability to sell records is that we have
not seen a single return of his CuBop debut.
Bobby and his band have been, and will continue to be, on tour
in support of his records. This combined with a strong push to
jazz radio, good press and an ad campaign targeting jazz
publications should result in strong initial sales of Footprints.
The music on this record will take it from there, generating a
lot of word of mouth and insuring steady sales for years to come.

THE PHARAOHS - UNRELEASED MATERIAL
=B3In The Basement=B2
LUV N' HAIGHT
***********************************************************************=
****
Following the reissue of the Pharaoh=B9s glorious 1971 LP
=8CThe Awakening=B9- their only previously released album- Luv =8CN =
Haight
Records present =8CIn The Basement=B9 a collection of Pharaohs tracks
never before released. While =8CThe Awakening=B9 documents The =
Pharaohs
work in the studio =8CIn The Basement=B9 (so named because the master
tapes were only recently uncovered in a basement) bears witness
to the legendary live performances of this funky Afro-Latin =
orchestra;
three cuts were recorded live in 1972 at the long defunct High
Chaparral on Chicago=B9s South Side, and a fourth, =8CDrum Suite=B9,
is an unplanned, fly-on-the-wall recording of an impromptu percussion
jam, and a fifth, =8CPharaohs Love Y=B9all=B9, was found on the =
masters
of the original Awakening session. All the Pharaoh=B9s trademarks are
here; R&B fused with the rhythms of Africa and the (other) Americas,
futuristic renderings of soul standards (check the Sun Ra influenced
=8CPeople Make The World Go Round=B9), and out-and-out party funk
delivered with the assured looseness and horny punch that only the
very best funk bands can deliver.
CD BONUS CUT: =8CLove and Happiness=B9
originally released as the b-side on the =8CFreedom Road=B2
45 is this rare cover of the Al Green classic - available
on the compact disc only.

PUCHO AND HIS LATIN SOUL BROTHERS
=B3SUPER FREAK=B2 and "YAINA" re-issues
CUBOP
***********************************************************************=
****
CuBop is proud to reissue two inspired latin-soul-funk albums from
arguably the most enigmatic and masterful player of this genre.
Pucho (Henry Brown) began his career as a street musician jamming
with his two friends Alvrin and Tommy Bunn learning to play Latin
percussion instruments and absorbing the musical synthesis of Harlem,
New York. Inspired directly by Mambo=B9s greatest timbalist Tito =
Puente,
Pucho aspired to follow in the path of this brilliant musician first
performing with Joe Panama in 1956 in New York City. Pucho
eventually found himself among Puente=B9s ranks and the two masters
performed together on several occasions. Pucho=B9s sound is the =
blending
of pure 60=B9s and 70=B9s soul with Latin jazz and manages to not =
compromise
either art form but infuses the two musics with good feelings and a
festive attitude. One highlight of Pucho=B9s journey as a performer =
came
at New York=B9s famed Carnegie Hall 1966. Also on the bill were jazz =
greats
Dizzie Gilespie, Donald Byrd and Duke Pearson=B9s Big Band but it was =
Pucho
and His Latin Soul Brothers who stole the show.
Super Freak, a reissue of one of Pucho=B9s more psychedelic =
latin-funk
LPs contains a 15-minute medley of =B3Superfly=B2, =B3Pusherman=B2 =
and
=B3Freddie=B9s Dead=B2. Yaina with it=B9s sensual cover art, was =
originally
released in 1971 and is a must for Latin jazz fans. It includes a
never-before released cover of of the Rolling Stones hit
=B3You Can=B9t Always Get What You Want=B2 available exclusively on =
this
CuBop reissue. Both releases contain excellent solos and layers of
potent rhythms. Pucho on these two albums: =B3It was what was =
happening
at the time, people we=B9re digging then and it=B9s proved to be =
timeless
music; I=B9m glad the acid jazz scene has picked up on it so a new
generation of kids can hear it.=B2
These days Pucho is still at it. He just returned from a successful
British tour and is slated to take his 8 piece ensemble back soon.
Ubiquity is sure that these two gems of 70=B9s jazz-funk culture will
again liven-up the dancefloors, cafe=B9s and pubs of the late 90=B9s =
and
long into the future.

MIKE JAMES KIRKLAND
"Hang On In There"
LUV N' HAIGHT
***********************************************************************=
****
The research team at Luv N=B9 Haight has once again resurrected an
obscure American classic to add to its acclaimed archive series.
This time it is the sweet soul of Mike James Kirkland=B9s Hang on
in There. Originally released in 1972--during the era of the
message song and the Black super hero; Super fly, Shaft and Sly
Stone. =B3I loved Sly,=B2 Kirkland recalls =B3he was talking about
the kind of things that I would have liked to talk about if I
didn=B9t have to sing love songs.=B2 Until Hang on in There,
Kirkland, who grew up singing gospel in Mississippi, had made
his way singing Motown style love songs. But as the swinging
Sixties gave way to the sobering Seventies with a war in
Vietnam and civil unrest at home, popular music charted the
shift in public sentiment. Saccharine love songs gave way
to the conscious psychedelic soul of Norman Whitfield, Isaac
Hayes and Curtis Mayfield at the same time Mike Kirkland
also began to incorporate social messages into his songs
and thus was born Hang on in There. While side two, the
=8CLove=B9 side, finds Kirkland in his more conventional
balladeering mode, side one, the =8CPeace=B9 side, showcases
his talent for crafting smooth uplifting conscious funk.
What Have We Done and Hang on in There stand beside What=B9s
Going On and Mercy Mercy Me, as classics of social realism,
of transcendent righteous soul.
=B3The Sentiments of the lyrics are still relevant today.
I always thought that this album would continue to have a
meaning and that, at some point, somebody would want to hear
it again. This is not old music, it is eternal music.=B2
