It sounds like your jazz tastes tend toward the "live" sound rather than
"studio" production -- or that may be just a result of what exposure you have
had. There are a couple of good bands here in New York whom have released
CDs, namely, Brooklyn Funk Essentials and Groove Collective. Buckshot
LeFonque (with Branford Marsalis) is also a good starter albeit a bit on the
commercial end of the spectrum but still decent in terms of the concept of
the music's direction. Also Solsonics, (as Paul Senior recommended) and
Young Disciples.
Some more stuff which I consider stellar is stuff coming from Japan --
United Future Organization (all releases)
DJ Nobukazu Takemura ( Spiritual Vibes is the name of his "live" band
project)
DJ Krush (operating in both realms of "live" and "studio" production)
Check out the CD compilations: Brownswood Multidirections One and Brownswood
Multidirections Two
Also Instinct Records here in New York City have released a shitload of
compilations (of mostly European stuff unfortunately for us American
producers). But the stuff is usually pretty good and the compilations really
try to cover the whole range of this music. They take mail orders and you
can contact them for a catalog at 72170.1753@compuserve.com,Internet or at
26 West 17th Street No. 502 New York, New York 10011 USA Telephone

I hope this helps.
