I am much more interested in Miles's earliest work than in his later work
in jazz fusion (incidentally, he "invented" the genre with "Bitches Brew,"
which was incomprehensible to many when it was first released).
Re: "The Birth of Cool," his small combo work with John Coltrane and his
minimalist ("cool jazz" ) period rank way up there among the finest music
of the 20th century (and I wouldn't say that about just anybody! Well,
Stravinsky, maybe).
