G'day,...

Finally got hold of my copy of "Jazz Brat" by Monday Michiru. Love it! =
I have some other info for those of you who are unfamiliar with this =
artist. Monday is the daughter of Japanese jazz pianist Toshiko =
Akiyoshi and alto-sax player Charlie Mariano. She started her career as =
an actress, performing in a film called "Luminous Woman" as an opera =
singer. She has also worked with the likes of Dj Krush, United Future =
Organization, Mondo Grosso and Ray Hayden (Opaz). "Jazz Brat" is one =
mellow collection of acid jazz tracks. If you are a fan of artists like =
Incognito, Carleen Anderson, etc i.e. the smoother side of acid jazz, =
then you'll really dig Monday Michiru's sweet vocals. She even does =
some phat scat on a track or two - could one dare call this "Acid Scat" =
? <ducks for cover>. There you have it,..a quickie review of =
sorts....and if I can indulge myself in a =
pre-feminist-deconstructionist-neo-chauvinist comment.....she's kinda =
cute too.

OzGroove,..the sorta-web-zine-thingy for Acid Jazz, Funk, =
don't-call-it-trip-hop, dub & groovy music has a new contributor. Paul =
Kitching, a local Adelaide music-press guru, will now be contributing a =
weekly column. This week sees some comments on the Aussie Vibes On A =
Summers Day groove-fest, a review on a live Tricky performance down =
under and other news. Come & check it out! =
<http://dove.mtx.net.au/~carlos/ozgroove.htm>
PLUS there's the ever expanding list of acid jazz type links which is =
growing all the time. The coolest site to check out - * right now * - =
is Plunge. You've seen the url, <http://www.plunge.com> now move & =
groove over there to hear a wicked mix of jazz/hip-hop/improv sounds. =20

The promised news on Undertones Volume 3 has been delayed. The =
distributor seems to be messing up the promo-pack distribution system. =
I grabbed a quick listen of a DJ's copy and it is more towards the =
abstract hip-hop side of things compared to the earlier volumes.

Adelaideans should check out acid jazz outfit CRISP,..they are having a =
CD launch at the Stag Hotel real soon now - near the start of the =
Adelaide Festival of Arts - check local press for details. A $15 =
purchase of their CD at the door gets you in for "free" OR pay $5 entry =
without the CD. For non-Adelaideans, I'll be contacting CRISP this =
week to see about putting some samples on Oz Groove. Stay tuned.
