6. dj krush fix of the week:
Twenty seconds into the Red Hot organization's latest AIDS benefit
recording, 'OFFBEAT: RED HOT SOUNDTRIP' (Wax Trax!/TVT, 3/5), and it's all
steam, swagger beats and wisps of turntable scratching -- DJ Krush, as
we're told it's said, is in the house. 'Soundtrip' is a trance-age
companion to Red Hot's earlier 'Red Hot and Dance' compilation. The
ostensible theme is beat, as in Burroughs and Kerouac. Poet Amiri Baraka
teams with DJ Spooky for a track. Throwback double bassist Christian
McBride meets DJ Krazy for an acid jazz groove. And two cuts feature
Tomandandy, the dynamic ambient duo whose wrote the atmospheric soundtrack
that accompanies Voyager's upcoming 'Beat Experience' CD-ROM as well as the
nationally touring beat exhibit, currently on display at New York's Whitney
Museum. But the real beat here is trip-hop, for lack of a better term,
courtesy of a host of production teams and DJs: among them Soul Coughing,
Moby, Barry Adamson, Emergency Broadcast Network and the ubiquitous Skylab,
whose half dozen musical interludes stitch the whole thing together.
