the music I (and probably you) have always been into was a blurring of
genres. You see, I
love all sorts of different styles of music... I eagerly await the DJ Shadow
album and flipped out the first time I heard Portishead, but I'm now flipping
out over the new Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan record. I consider My Bloody Valentine
one of the greatest 'rock groups' ever and Al Green one of the best singers.
I
get all teary eyed when I hear punk funkers the Minutemen, or John Coltrane.
I
went through a heavy Throbbing Gristle/experimental industrial phase just as
I
went through a heavy 'gotta have everything on Mo Wax!' phase. And right now
I'm
listening to Mystic Moods new 'Amazon' single for some serious drum n bass
fix.

Well said, my man!! As music lovers on this list, I am certain that the
bulk of us have all gone through a myriad variety of styles and genres. What
I get the biggest kick from is the cross-fertilization that inevitably
happens when new genres are created. And what I'd like to hear is something
like a Throbbing Gristle or Test Department vocal sample used in conjuction
with a drum-n-bass groove layered over a cello or the like... I think you get
the idea. I really don't mind reading postings which might be tangentially
related to "AJ" as long as it continues a thread from previous postings. I
also believe that most people on this list practice a level of
self-censorship, so that it isn't always necessary to flame one who doesn't
post a message in compliance with YOUR idea of what is or is not appropriate.
A tangential subject will simply take its own course, hopefully, and die a
peaceful death.
P.S. I support the discussion of CERTAIN styles of drum-n-bass on this list
because, IMHO, as genres of music go, what's not to say that one day we will
hear miles davis over a 160bpm eric b. & rakim drum loop and people start
calling this something corny like acid jungle jazz or whatever shit term?
What I'm really saying is: don't be so quick to judge and close minds. A
degree of tolerance is always good for the world.
