This may seem a bit of stretch for research material, but I would start
reading the liner notes on some of these new Funk Compilations out...The
History of Funk or Funk Essentials if you have them would probably be a good
start. Then of course any book on James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, and
anything about the P-Funk. If all else fails, I would send a post to the
Funky Music list out of MIT. The subscription address is
