(snipped in the interests of bandwidth and brevity...if you missed
the earlier posts, set up an acid-jazz list archive...I would, but I
don't have the space or the type of account that will allow others
access!)

Thank You, Ian, for picking up my craft vs. art thread and elevating
it to a deeper level of understanding. I wholeheartedly agree with
everything you said.

I think the other main component of "art" is that it must communicate
something (a feeling, an ambience, if you will) to someone else. Michelangelo
would not have been a great artist had he only drawn pictures in the
steam on the bathroom mirror. I think the guy who invented "TILEX"
is a great craftsman (have you seen the way that shit dissolves
mildew?), but just because everyone buys his product doesn't mean
he's an artist.

I guess my point was that the good artist *transcends* craft. Dizzy
Gillespie played the hell out of a bent horn (I had the chance to see
him a year before his death, so I can attest to that...zoweeee).

Thanks for putting what I wanted to say so succinctly. And I
agree...let's drop the DJ vs Musician thread. I've only been on this
list a month and I'm most certainly tired of it.

Cheers,

Mike
