DJ KRUSH, that is, whose U.S. debut doesn't quite happen with the
upcoming ffrr/London release of 'MEISO' (4/9). Last year, New York-
based indie Shadow Records brought the Japanese DJ's self-titled
acid jazz outing to our shores, full of his insinuated funk but marred
by a clutter of cameos, including amateur-diva vocals. 'Meiso' is the
one worth waiting for, a rarified drums-and-bass spread of rap for
those who dislike rappers. No offense to CL Smooth, who guests on a
few cuts, but Krush is best unadulterated, free to spin his vinyl with
the delicate care of an antiquarian. His atmospheres are as spooky as
anything DJ Premiere has wrought for GangStarr, and his affection
for a spare groove and a raspy off-beat are irrepressible. In the
meanwhile, look for an import copy of 'Strictly Turntablized' (Mo'
Wax) and prepare to be krushed. Lucky folk in the Tristate area can
check out his New York debut 2/2 at the West Beth Theater, where
he'll be DJing an event for the Red Hot Foundation. Any e-witness
reports would be appreciated.
