Regarding your questions about programming breakbeats -- it is not
particularly hard to loop a fat break and run it 170bpm. That said, this
technique has not really been used for about three years. Because of the
excellent features on most mid-range samplers now you can time stretch
and/or chop your beats like the big boys and not spend a million dollars. If
you have Pro Tools available to you, start taking a few loops and then
cutting them into 16th notes and assigning them into a drum editor (Cubase
has a great one) then run your breaks this way and you'll see how you can
add variety and a 'human' feel to your break.
The British tech magazine 'Future Music' has been spending a lot of
time on this subject so pick up a copy and check out their sampler cd's to
see how it all works.
Finally, I have two tracks -- both drum'n'bass -- due out on
Seattle's Sweet Mother Recordings. The project titles are High Fidelity and
Sabotage so keep your eyes open for some North American drum'n'bass cuts.
