The New Beasties?

Why hasn't anyone commented on the Beastie Boy's "The In Sound from Way
Out"? This is an unexpected gem. All instrumental. I just picked it up
today at the local Blockbuster where it was on sale. I couldn't tell from
the cover if it was a full-length or not. The track titles on the back
are kind of run together so it's not clear where one ends and another
begins. The two-paragraph notes inside are in French, but this is a
domestic release on Capitol/Grand Royal. After one listen-through, the
closest match I can give for this one is to the Charlie Hunter band. Yes,
that's right. This isn't rap and it's not really hip hop, despite the
back cover which says "Le son Hip du monde Hop!" This is pretty much a
jazz recording and it's well done. It diverges from the Hunter sound in
that some tracks put more on the organ (Mark Ramos Nishita on keyboard)
and there's a track, "Shambala," with Tibetan monk chanting in it.

Complete track listing:

1. Groove Holmes
