I guess there's a newsgroup more related to these types of questions, but I was wondering if any of the kind DJs on the list can send me a mail about turntable line noise. I bought a 1200 and I have it hooked directly to my mackie mixer and the signal is too low, and upon cranking it up to get the signal audible I get a horrible humming noise. Do I have to buy a DJ mixer, make an electrician install grounded outlets in my apartment, or do something else, or is it possible that I have bought a bum turntable (I don't think I did, it was fresh out of the box). I'm wondering if there is also some sort of signal amplifier thing available that might not necessitate my buying a full blown DJ mixer.

Again, sorry about the non-AJ content....the only thing I can contribute on that front is that I finally bought my first CDs in about two months, the Bill Laswell 'Altered Beats' thing (dope but a little scratch heavy) and Up Bustle & Out, 'one colour....' which is excellent but a little less Bolivian Peruvian Turkish than I expected.

I missed half the posts on the illbient thing because my server went down unrecoverably but I just also wanted to say that I liked DJ Lo-ki's post on the matter, it made me smile.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I bumped into former list member Caron Banez at Giant Step on Thursday who asked me to tell all New Yorkers that she can get you on their reduced admission guest list, call 212-905-7706 and leave her a message. Giant Step's new home, the Soho Brewery (formerly a cheezy mexican place called, uh, Nacho Mama's) is great, by the way - much more elaborate than previous incarnations. They had 70s-looking porno on the large screen for a while though which I thought was a bit much.
