Jason,
The line outputs on a turntable are much lower than your standard tape
deck or CD equipment. You need to get a phono preamplifier if you are
hooking the device into line level inputs. Creek makes a good one for
about $300, or you can go all the way down to a battery powered rat shak
phono amp for around $10 (I think). It depends what quality you need.
I didn't think that if you're using a mackie mixer that you are using
budget equipment, so I'd look for a decent preamp used in the paper or
stereo shops that carry second hand stuff. With the hum problem, I would
absolutley use a 3 prong grounded plug. There may also be a lead off of
your turntable for a ground. That would hook up to the ground plug that
would be next to a phono input for the table.
Good luck

get a horrible humming noise. Do I have to buy a DJ mixer, make an

install grounded outlets in my apartment, or do something else, or is it
possible that I have bought a bum turntable (I don't think I did, it was

out of the box). I'm wondering if there is also some sort of signal

thing available that might not necessitate my buying a full blown DJ
mixer.
