Galliano was actually reponsible for spreading the Acid Jazz vibe
all over Europe in 91/92. In these years they had an amazing live
show which got thousands of people (including myself) into this type
of music. That's why they are still large over here. I witnessed
very few concerts since then which could equal that Galliano gig
in March 91. I spent a year in London and I remember a special
acoustic Talkin' Loud X-mas gig in 1992 at the Union Chapel which
featured amongst others Omar, Incognito, Urban Species, Marxman and
MC Solaar. But when Galliano entered the stage and did an acoustic
version of Prince of Peace the vibes went through the roof. While
they played the rest of their program the 700 people in that
church were dancing on the benches. Unfortunately their new material
is not as strong as their first two lp's (imo) and their live shows
are not as fascinating as they were in the old days. Let's see what
the new album brings.
Talkin about UK Rap, I wonder why nobody mentioned MC Mell'o' (whose
1991 debut "Thoughts Released" has to be one of the best rap albums
ever), Jonzi D, MC Ni, Mad Melissa (from Urban Poets Society) and the
rest of the London freestyle posse. Their live shows and collaborations
with live musicians usually surpass the Ghetto attitude of most
American rappers.
Patrick.
