A late post on this one... I've been insanely busy of late.
A while ago when a 'why are you posting the daily local weather forcast'
type thread came up, we in Toronto responded by setting up a local
distribution list which has since expanded to about 40 people discussing
local events and musical topics. The downside i guess is that it
practically eliminated local representation on this list.
Just to let everyone know that we're not living in a vacuum here's whats
been up:
recently: Cassandra Wilson w/ Courtney Pine
This Friday the Downtown Jazz Fest begins launching with a funk meltdown,
Maceo Parker backed by local souljazz band Panic. After that show, in the
same location, we drop the Bump N' Hustle which is a regular
funky/souljazz/DJ joint that Paul E. Lopes and I put together to showcase
local talent in a streetsoul cabaret style. These shows always sell out
(300, and 150 turned away) and we were picked to close out the Maceo night.
Next week @ 567 club we'll also be doing the Canadian launch party for
America Is Dying Slowly, the next in the Red Hot series featuring
Bizmarkie, Chubb Rock and Prince Paul, Pete Rock w/ the Lost Boyz, Wu-Tang
Eightball & MJG, Goodie Mob, Mobb Deep, De La Soul, Sadat X and numerous
others (no they won't all be in the house but you should be able to catch
the special on the air on MTV soon).
Up and coming: Herbie Hancock, Medeski Martin and Wood, Abdullah Ibrahim,
Kenny Garret at the jazz fest.
A show with the Fugees, D'Angelo, Bass Is Base, Cypress Hill
Caribana - the annual street baccanal which turns out
a million onto the streets for a major jump up.
There'll be a festival in August with Roy Ayers, Galliano,
Groove Collective, DJ Greyboy, a Ubiquity contingent including
Bobby Matos and Slide Five, a Mo' Funk contingent, local
artists and more.
DJ joints kickin all week, Afrofest, Latin fest, Soul n' Blues
... should be a good summer.
