Joan Osborne is the perfect example of a talented
artist that the music industry has ruined.
I don't know much of her material, but from what
I have read about her, I would like to point out the
following:
That annoying-as-sand-in-your-eyes song,
"What if God yadda yadda," was written by none
other than the same fellow who co-wrote Cyndi
Lauper's first break-through smash, "Girls
Just Wanna Have Fun." Cyndi was and is a talented
musician, as her later albums showed, but wasn't
trusted when she began. The same may be true
of Osborne. In fact, I read an interview wherein
she claimed *that* song wasn't one she even wanted
to include on the album.
When will the music industry insiders start to trust
the artists and the music they play themselves, rather
than trying to make the artists more mainstream
(read - palatable by the masses)?
There are so few artists that get there by playing
what they want. BNH, or PRIMUS, to name a couple.
And each has to release at least one independent CD
that does extraordinarily well (in dollar terms) to
get any notice whatsoever.
This is why I wholly support the AJ scene, and the
INDEPENDENT record scene in general. Because
it is the only field wherein one will find the true
artists pushing for new boundaries.
U2 didn't become experimental until ENO found them.
Why did Sheryl Crow sweep the Grammies 2 years
ago? Why did it take 5...FIVE(!) people to write
"All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun?"
The music industry is pathetic.
