Just got Snowboy's latest, "Pit-Bull Latin Jazz," and I'm hoppin' to the
rhythms. For all those into the Latin sounds of acid jazz, this is more
great stuff from one of the originals of AJ. In all the years of
listening to all kinds of music, I've always let the music speak for
itself and rarely listened to musicians (or their critics) TALK about the
music. Since joining the list, though, I've been listening to just that,
and it's been interesting. Now, I'm even reading sleeve notes, and here's
what Snowboy says about his music and the acid jazz scene:

"...Variety was always what made our scene so important and for a while
it got stuck in a rut with DJs just playing beats and keeping it in the
mix, so with DJs getting back to using the microphone and playing 'across
the board' ie. funk, Latin, Afro, and beats, it looks like we're back on
course again, which is great for me because that means more work!!

"Having been lucky enough to have played and DJed around the world, I'm
amazed at the fact that some people still think acid jazz is a type of
music (usually funk - for instance 'we're an acid jazz band' or 'we play
acid jazz'). But really it was just an in-joke amongst a few friends (Bob
Jones, Eddie Piller, Gilles Peterson, Chris Bangs and Simon Booth as well
as a few others) and ended up as the new 'blanket' name for the jazz
dance scene whether it be bop, fusion, Latin, Afro or funk.

"My music is acid jazz. It's also jazz dance or Latin jazz, but even more
correctly it's Afro Cuban jazz. I'll tell you what though, if you really
want to know, between you and me, my music is dirty, nasty, pit-bull
Latin jazz."
