If you ever find yourself as the DJ in a bar in a semi-sized city such as
Waterloo, you'll notice that as soon as you play a popular song, half the bar
comes up to make another request. However, if someone hears a song,
especially a catchy one, United Future Airlines by U.F.O. for instance, they'll
come up and ask what it is, this is good. What I do here is tell them what it
is, give them the record and let them look at it and read it and I tell them
all about the band, where to buy etc.- They'll ask for that song for the rest
of forever, guaranteed. My point being, most people don't listen to the
music, they like a catch, and an association (childhood, being drunk etc).
My suggestion is to vote no to the newsgroup. If the newsgroup goes through, I
think change the name of this group. If you just like 'acid jazz' then stay
with the newsgroup, if you're into more, you can handle a minor name change (a
rose by any other name.... ).
ObAJ (what does this mean?)- Heard Trip Hop test pt2. I'm not sure why it is
called this since most of it is pretty fast, sounds more trancy. It's OK. One
dissappointing thing is the mix of Strata3 (it's not a man's world), I have the
full length of Strata3 and the mix on it is not nearly as cool.
Strata-3 -Strategic Maneuvers- get ready to open your mind, this record is
nuts. Contains two super crazy, extremely hard and erratic electro tracks. I
thought they were too much at first but really grew on me (as the best stuff
does) Also, a couple of nice spacey hip hop beat-type things. Plus more, sure
to grow on you, these guys are wicked. Great sample:
'This music is not for your bumpin' and jonnin'(?)
This music is for those who think
For those of you who don't think
Just thought I'd warn you before we dropitonya'
Used record find- Richard Davis -Dealin' (muse records) Soundtrack to a
conceptual film I think. Features David Spinozza, plus others I can never
remember. Mostly straight jazz stuff a la late sixties, one super funky
thing called Dealin'. If you see it pick it up.
Fresh Jazz Vibes - finally got this. Congrats out to Ian and the Mo Funk gang,
it's really good (sometimes too much vocal for me but.. ) One Step Beyond out
of TO does it in the best jazz-funk style, very nice. Sharkskin also makes a
great show. Soul Crib out of Vancouver is also a good one for those who are
into the Ubiquity jazzy stuff.
I thought the article about the trombonist was really funny.
Pretty good rant, sorry for those who resent it
