I called Ubiquity and ordered this new CD as soon as I heard it was
available. I haven't heard much mention of it yet on the list and
wondered if it was just a matter of people getting their hands on it.
Having never heard Greyboy live or canned, but having heard a lot of
praise on the list, I was somewhat unprepared for this recording. On
first listen, I was a bit disappointed. I wasn't hearing any big sounds
and was expecting something with a little more impact. But, as with many
of my favorite recordings, this one was subtle. Now I listen with a
"trained ear" and greatly appreciate what I'm hearing. I noticed a
parallel in the comments from people who attended the Allstars' show in
NYC. The groove is definitely there, it just doesn't walk up and slam you
in the face like some other sounds. There is a definite "sunniness" to
the music, at least in this recent recording. For those who can
appreciate such musicianship, this one won't gravitate to the back of
the box as fast as those recordings that sound so great at first but soon
wear thin.
Check it out.
