Florida + Solid Doctor + more

As to inquries about Florida, I can help out in this regard-

Jacksonville- there are actually a few things going on, but I'm not sure of
the exact details. My good friend Darrell Duke spins quite often, and plays
an outstanding stew of AJ, funk, headz beatz, and drum n bass. He works at
a record store called NOW HEAR THIS, which I suppose stocks that sort of
stuff (I've never been to Jacksonville, so I don't know). Anyway, call him
at Now Hear This and ask for Darrell, he'll give you the skinny on what's
going on. Tell him I sent cha.

Gainesville- things have been changing there lately, so I'm still not sure
what exactly is up. I know that the club Simon's does the dance thing and
has some fine AJ DJs spinning on the roof of the club. This is usually on
Saturdays. They also do a once a month thing on a Friday that features all
AJ, and I think King Britt plays regularly at that, though I'm not too
sure. And Sam Rivers will be at the Florida Theater this month, though,
silly me, I have no exact date on that. E-mail me if you want me to drag up
more info.

Orlando- This I know about. PHAT N JAZZY is the thing on Tuesdays at the
Sapphire Supper Club... DJ BMF, Q-BURNS A.M. (me), DJ SLACK, and other
surprise guests flippin the wax. Plus live musicians a plenty (including a
D'Angelo look alike on keys!) and hundreds of groovin folks. A must go-to,
for sure. An upcoming Friday will be KITCHEN SINK at the Go Lounge, which
features DJ BMF and SLACK and may become a regular thing. The name of the
night signifies no boundaries in the music played! My pal DJ MOT does a
'trip hop' thing at CAFE ELEVEN on Firday nights... this is a great
intimate setting, and I love this night. I've gotten smashed at every one
so far. And MAXIMUM SOUND happens on occasional Thursdays at Barbarella for
the drum n bass fix, and I spin this thing as well as Jeffee from Junglized
zine. All of these clubs are in downtown. Again, e-mail me for exact info.

Got the new SOLID DOCTOR album today (called "Beats are High" or something
like that). As you know, Solid Doctor is another Fila Brazilia side band.
I've only gotten to hear the new FILA BRAZILIA (Mess) a few times, and it
was okay but a little disappointing compared to other releases of theirs.
The one thing that threw me off was the use of live drums throughout... it
tended to drag a few of the selections, and the sound of the drums was
unique and tuned in a 'jazz drum' sense, but a bit boomy and distracting,
especially when that sound is constant on an entire LP. I felt that the
Fila folks (Steve Cobby to you, eh) got a really cool new drum set and some
nice old microphones to get a nice sound with it, and recorded a whole
album around it in his excitement. Well, this SOLID DOCTOR CD has a picture
of an old jazz drum kit on the cover! Whatdayaknow. Anyway, I like this
Solid Doctor better, so far. Very moody and soulful, and only a few of the
tracks have that drum sound (I like certain percussion sounds in small
doses. I get bored when the same sound is used throughout an entire LP.
Just me.). Extremely recomended. I'm struck by the nice soulfulness of some
of the tracks, especially as electronics are utilized (always in
conjunction with played instruments). And, I'm not entirely putting off
Fila's "Mess"... it's still really good, just not as good as the other 2
CDs in my opinion. It still will probably grow, though.

Digging the new Straight No Chaser issue. Good articles on Dr. Octagon and
man of the moment Photek. By the way, Photek's upcoming UK album will be
coming out in the US on Astralwerks, I've just been told by someone at that
company. The first "Hidden Camera" single will be released by them as well.
How soon after the UK release dates remain to be seen.

Please note all Q-Burn and Bad Mood corresponders: that pesky Compuserve
