herbie hancock-"dis is da drum"
i know this album is old news, but everytime i spin a cut off it, people are
surprised. i spin the title cut, "call it '95" (smash also did a mix of
this),
and "butterfly" and people go OFF!
bluescreen (w/john hassell)-"deja' voodoo/sex goddess" 12"
b/w sven vath's "monk trance"
another "non-new" record that i get a lot of use from. i'm always spinning
"deja'" lotsa bottom!
reg e. gaines-"(just want a) cab" 12"
reg e.'s really a poet in a hiphop world, not to be confused w/a rapper/mc.
his album "please don't take my air jordans" is brilliant, but rough in a
few spots. anyway, the track is over some serious head-bobbin' beats and
starts out w/a verbal bit i like, the cabbie saying "i don't go to brooklyn".
groove thing (feat. bill ware)-"king/binwa" 12"
you may remember bill ware from the groove collective, he's the reason i
picked
this one up. he dope cut on here is the b-side "binwa". it's fast as f*ck
(i ALWAYS have to slow it down to fit it in a mix) but it's not a house
track...
bottom to spare here, w/really jazz chords (the vibes don't hurt, either). i
usually spin the vocal version (the instrumental is cool too). on the a side
"king" is an alright track, but on the vocal mix, there's an 80's sounding
snare drum that really sticks out, and ruins the whole thing for me. the
vibe instrumental remix gets around this. oh yeah, this tune is a LOT slower
than "binwa".
anyway, these are a few of my favorite things...
