gary katz must think so, the raw stylus lp "pushing against the flow" sounds
too much like steely dan, and not enough like their earlier stuff like "many
ways" from the "giant step" comp.--w/the exception of the title track (pure
phzatness!).
all slagging aside, don't forget that the dan was really a 70's band (the only
record they did in the 80's as the dan was "gaucho"--a wonderful record that
had the misfortune of having to FOLLOW their best "aja"). i'll have to admit
when "the nightfly" came out, i was starting to wonder what contribution
walter
made (donald's solo sounded like the next steely dan record). "kamakiriad" &
"11 tracks of whack" (walter's solo record with a really bad name) seem to
suggest that walter nudges donald into trying newer techniques (or something).
while i like the idea, i find both albums annoying because the old way (i.e.
session musicians) would have served the music better (or someone that knew
about loops AND programming...).
