Yeah, I have this album, it's called "Before the Dawn" (I think); one half of
it is funky jazz stuff and the other half is kind of spacey avant jazz; a good
record. On the "clipping" (or stealing) note that's being discussed, check out
the guitar intro bars to "Kicking Back" and the Blackbyrds' "Do It To It" (idf
you have both of them. Pretty damn similiar.

On another note, another keyboardist, Azar Lawrence, did a cover of "Kicking
Back" on his album "People Moving" from '78ish. His has a faster beat and has
some vocals too but it is also a good version.

there's another 70's record called "light of dawn" or something like that
w/a cool funk-jazz track called "kicking back", most of the record is abstract
fusion, like jean-luc ponty or something. her playing reminded me of herbie
hancock around that time. she actually shows up on one of herbie's tunes from
the late 70's, they're both doing the vocoder (talk-box) thing.
she did a tour w/ndugu--jazz funk drummer, ex-weather report/george duke/dazz
band/crusaders/etc.--where it was just the two of them, and she can REALLY
play.
if you get a chance to check her live, do it! just don't be surprised if she
does a lot of r&b.
