Re: Why Is the Parliament-Funkadelic reunion treated as the second coming?
A: Mainly because in a musical sense, it is. If it comes off well, it will
give everybody a taste of what P-Funk sounded like in their
heyday...possibly, along with Sun, Ra, Fela Ellington, Basie and James Brown,
the best large band that ever took the stage, and IMHO, the best improvising
rock band ever (the dead improvised, but they damn sure didn't have a beat).
I'm a P-funker from the old school, and I kind of nod when I hear younger
headz rave about the recent shows. They are great shows, no doubt, but
remember, this band that George has now -as deadly as it is - is but a shadow
of the old one. If you have had your mind blown by the P-Funk All Stars,
imagine seeing them when they had Maceo Parker Wesley (JB), Michael Brecker
(brecker Bros), AND Bootsy Collins AND Bernie Worrell ( who wrote nearly all
of their best songs - "Flashlight" etc) AND Mike Hampton AND Jerome
Brailey/Dennis Chambers AND Boogie Mosson AND Gary Shider AND Billy Nelson. I
know bootsy and Bernie are going to be there, and the possibility of them
getting back together on stage with Clinton is like bringing Eric Clapton,
Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce together again, or getting Prince back together
with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. All this plus the Mothership? I also hope the
new members will force george to stop coasting and play some different
material...especially the old Funkadelic stuff, like Good to Your Earhole and
Comin Round the Mountain.
