Downstairs at the Middle East - Sun., Nov. 24th 9:00 p.m.

FEATURING THE DOWN LOW CONNECTION, BUB, ELMER FUNK,
SOMEONE'S X, AND WZBC's FUNK TO THE FOLKS DJ'S
472 Massachusetts Ave. Cambridge, MA, (617) 354-8414 - tickets are $10

Sunday, November 24th, there will be a fund-raiser supporting the
endeavors of the RiteAway Team, a Los Angeles based non-profit
organization defending the rights of the disabled and victims of crime.
Brooke O'Kelly, executive director, founded the RiteAway Team in 1995
after a series of crimes left her completely deaf. RiteAway is a
national 24 hour service that helps to assist police, victims of
violence, and the disabled. In reference to the upcoming fund-raiser,
Ms. O'Kelly expressed that "Music says a million words, if a picture
says one thousand. One song, carries memories, and more. This will be a
great message to people of both worlds - those that care mostly of music
- and victims." Groups performing will be The Down Low Connection, Elmer
Funk, Bub, Somebody1s X, and Funk to the Folks dj's.

The Down Low Connection - A roster of 7 jazz and hip-hop musicians
contributing their unique skills to mesh into one voice, combining the
colors of big-band jazz, P-Funkadelic jams, African percussion, hip-hop,
and touches of R&B, shaking things up and generously spreading the
groove and good vibes throughout. "The Down Low's good grooves mix a
deep, bombastic rhythm section; sweet, soulful horns; and top flight
MC's to create some flavorful hip-hop spiced with jazz overtones."
-Billboard magazine June 15, 1996. In the Boston Tab's third annual
survey of the top 10 unsigned acts, the D.L.C. was selected as Boston's
number one unsigned band. They were nominated for Best Funk Band and
Best Hip-hop Act in this year's Boston Music Awards. The Down Low has
recently independently released its debut CD, "Feel the Real." This
ensemble is bringing
rap back to the musical and political levels of its beginnings -- the
Last Poets, Gil Scott Heron, Jungle Brothers and KRS-One while drawing
from
the jazz tradition in the revolutionary and innovative spirit of Miles
Davis and John Coltrane, and funking it up with the audacity and
nastiness
of George Clinton..

"Probably the best pipeline this side of the Allegheny." -TubeSurf
Magazine. Bub cooks up funky, groovy gumbo combining thick-souled groove
with frenetic melodic excursions creating a peppery soup of funk, soul,
acid, and groove. A trio of drums, bass, and guitar, Bub tops thick
hip-hop and Latin rhythms with melodic stories created when
mild-mannered instruments are twisted (by mischievous kids). Bub sings
vocal musings and harmonies fusing positive vibes and head-swaying
music, not played to ignite angst, but instead to cause dreamy smiles -
music that flirts with your feet. Bub is groovy music that will take you
on a journey if you just let your body go.

The other music groups featured are Elmer Funk, Someone's X, and Funk to
the Folks dj's. Elmer Funk is a 6 piece funk band from Tufts University.
Elmer Funk has performed extensively throughout Boston - packing such
clubs as The House of Blues. Someone's X is a Californian band playing
in Boston for the first time. Their debut CD will be released in early
December. The Funk to the Folks dj's spin extensively throughout the
area and are regular dj's on WZBC. Their long-standing shows "Funk to
the Folks" and "School Beats" can be heard every Tuesday from 5 - 7:15
pm.
