Speaking of Billboard Live, and speaking of Giant Step, I checked out the
Groove Collective show last night at the aforementioned club (FYI, yes, it's
owned by Billboard Magazine, it's on the Sunset Strip, and the place is
incredible. Nice sound system and lighting). They played a smokin, tight set
with
mostly new material (from their 2nd album); I believe they only played 2
songs from their first album - "Ms. Grier" and "Saturday Afternoon". Nappy
was in full effect; Richard Worth jammed on his flute, Bill Ware pounded
them vibes and Jon Maron played some badass bass (along with a jazz
guitar-like solo to boot!). And their trumpet player, who only has 1 1/2
arms, blasted out some mad Breckeresque flava. TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT
TIGHT!!!!! Before the show I chatted with a friend of mine, Carlos Guaico,
keyboardist/guitarist of Mesh of Mind, who told me he checked them out in
NYC and said, "Tight! They sound just like the record..." Also spotted in
the audience was a hatless Jez Colin (bassist of the Solsonics) who came to
groove to the 'Collective.
I also chatted with Jon Maron whom I said, "you are a badass player!" and
asked what effects he used. He simply used a cheap Boss octave pedal and
dynamic filter...He also told me that GC will be touring in Europe in a
couple weeks, so you folks on the other side of the Atlantic - watch out!
